Blog EntryCats keep the rat population in checkSep 19, '06 10:56 AM
for everyone

A neighbour mentioned that there should be more cats around. He had seen rats and they even gnawed through some of the wires in his car. Maybe he should complain to the Town Council that there are not enough cats around ;)   Community Cats, like Rocky, are doing a good job. Just today I received another non-vegan present from Rocky…. Well, it’s the thought that counts ;) Even our One-Eye Ginger is still a good mouser!

Blog EntryCats found but phone lost...Jun 17, '06 4:39 AM
for everyone

Just to inform friends who read my blog that I have lost my mobile phone 2 days ago (and with it all my contacts). It was taken from the bicycle basket while I was trying to trap Pearl. Surprisingly, I am not very upset about it, just glad that Sally and Sandra are back (both were sterilized last month).

Sandra had me worried when she disappeared for several days…I searched and called AVA… but then she came back, looking fine.  Sally from *32  Area 3 was gone for about a week before I found her at *50 and carried her back but she left again. Sylvia found her yesterday at the playground near *48.

There has been a newly abandoned cat at *05 area 2. This young black and white cat was so hungry that she crawled right up to Ginger’s bowl to take a bite. I think Ginger aka One-Eye Jack was too shocked to react.  I quickly gave the new cat her own bowl of food and had to refill twice before she ran off.  Thought that I may not see her again as she was very frightened, but then saw and fed her at *02 yesterday. Hope she sticks around…

Blog EntryGinger, Patches, Lilly and Little SkyApr 28, '06 1:42 PM
for everyone

Ginger’s stitches were removed today and Patches recovered well from dental surgery. She had 3 teeth extracted and was put on i/v drip. Patches has ulcers in her mouth and throat and the vet suspects FIV, as her immunity is low… but she seems to be much better now and ate a good portion, though still with some difficulty. I will keep her in for 2 weeks, to give her antibiotics and hope to get her to put on some weight.

Lilly and Sky are both doing well. Little Sky had a slight fever, but her appetite had improved and she has put on some weight since last month, so she was finally sterilized today.

Poor Ginger has to wear that awful collar for 10 days. It gets in the way of things but he is not complaining too much. The vet’s bill was higher than expected, with a total of $266,50. I guess the original quote did not include injections, medications and etc….

Photo: what a funny coincidence. I didn’t even notice the picture on the newspaper until my son pointed it out.

The vet just called to suggest that Ginger stay there over night for observation, as he is still drowsy (no extra charge). Still, I would rather have him back here, will call later to see how he is...

Blog EntryLittle Grey and One-Eye GingerApr 18, '06 2:20 AM
for everyone

Little Grey from *15 Area 2 was neutered on Monday. He is just about 6 months old. Will keep him in for one or two more days. 6 more cats to be done next week… 3 females and 3 males.

Ginger went in for surgery this morning. Hope to pick him up in the afternoon. I bought a bright green elastic collar with bell for him, so that our One-Eye Ginger will be more visible. He doesn’t mind wearing it, was running around the house and very playful yesterday.

Blog EntryGinger, Dawn & Sky updateApr 13, '06 7:42 AM
for everyone

Ginger has a nice big cage, many thanks to Cathy! I fixed a hammock for him this morning, to make him more comfortable, since he will be staying for about 2 weeks.

Dawn had me worried, but she is ok now. She ate a little and walked around but is still resting most of the time.

Gave Sky the NSAID today (was supposed to start yesterday) and was relieved that she had no bad reaction to the medication. I was worried after what happened to Nushi. Sky’s eye does look fine today and hopefully she is getting better. Our Little Sky loves to rest high up in the “tree”, on those thin branches. Has been up there all day, I guess she misses playing with Dawn.

for everyone

Brought Ginger to the vet yesterday, but the surgery was postponed to April 18, as he had diarrhoea the night before.  The vet said it was glaucoma and that there was no vision left in the affected eye.

The last time Ginger stayed at my home was about 2 years ago, when he was being sterilized. He already had a cataract problem at that time and was given medication and ointment, but no improvement… I remember he gave us quite a scare when we suddenly saw him on the ledge outside the kitchen window. We are wiser now and have put up wire mesh on most of the windows.

Ginger seems to be fine, no more diarrhoea, good appetite, and I don't think he is in pain. He followed me around the kitchen when I let him out of the cage, found a place to sharpen his claws and was very curious about the vacuum cleaner...

Ashley went for sterilization today and I stayed with him during the operation. Barely one hour later he was wide-awake and ready to go home.

I also took the opportunity to ask the vet about Ginger’s condition. Ginger has a cataract in his right eye, which has been getting worse. The eyeball is enlarged and there is some tearing. The vet suggested that the eye should be removed if it is not functioning as the cat could be in pain. He estimated that it would cost about $150.

I will bring Ginger in next week and have the eye removed if that is what needs to be done…

Blog EntryMy first sponsorMar 10, '06 6:35 AM
for everyone

A friend of mine offered to sponsor one cat, and I am thinking of the *06 area 3 Ginger Boy, as she asked me to choose a pitiful one…

Ginger has a cataract in his right eye, which is quite a handicap to a street cat who constantly has to watch out for dangers like cars, dogs and human beings… I suspect that he has become blind in that eye.
