for everyone

Thoughts of a fellow vegan…

The Year Of The Rat

The value of its life is degraded to that of dirt -

we label it “a pest!”.

They are born with a death sentence -

to be exterminated at sight, or be used for laboratory testing.

In the Year of the Rat,

may we all see beyond the glossy symbols,

decorations and empty wishes.

may we all appreciate the good things we already have in life,

like food, sleep, clothes, money, work...

and never take these for granted.

may we all have compassion for the less fortunate amongst us,

such as the rat.

With compassion, true insight and generosity...

maybe, just maybe...

the new year will be happier.

The real pest are we the human beings but we live in perpetual denial and always blame other species for our "misfortunes".

I remember Venerable Antonio, a soccer-fan Italian tibetan monk, said that we who realise that anger is a negative emotion is extremely fortunate. To most people, anger is "natural". So we who are able to see the suffering behind a "steak", a piece of "pork", etc, are extremely fortunate because most people are just ignorant, being caught up in the cravings of the sense of sight and taste.

I was at the barber yesterday. He told me that the fruit-stall man who was seen to throw durian husks at a community cat some months ago, has moved to just outside his shop. He said that yesterday he "shoo-ed" a cockcroach out of his shop as he managed to stop a reflex of stamping on it. However he said the fruit-seller squashed the cockcroach with his foot. I told him that the karmic results of two different actions on one sentient being that happened to be a cockcroach in this life, were like heaven and hell.

I witnessed this scene once at a bus-stop, whereby schoolboy A told schoolboy B there's a big, red ant on his arm and was going to blow it off for B. But B quicky slapped down on his own arm hard and killed the ant. Then B sort of show off to A the dead ant, I was very disturbed by this show of callousness and wanted to speak to the boy but did not as he probably thinks why this nutcase is making a fuss out of an ant !

This reminded me of the barber where I had my pre-CNY No 3 haircut, who told me that he shooed a cockroach out of his shop but the fruit-seller man squashed it with his foot. The cockroach had finished its karma but the fruit-seller is yet to reap what he has sown and it won't be "sweet"!
