Blog EntryUpdate on: BLOCK 875 CATS IN GRAVE DANGER!Jun 7, '07 4:15 AM
for everyone

I managed to get a copy of the survey form and it is very clear now that the Property Manager was mistaken when she informed me that the survey was only targeted at unsterilised cats.

I went to speak with the residents of this block yesterday and found that an overwhelming majority does not want the cats killed. I spoke to a total of 36 families and 18 of them claimed not to have received the survey form.

The feedback I received was that:

2 residents want the cats killed

7 are neutral

27 residents do not want the cats to be removed and killed

One of the 2 people who want the cats killed said she pitied them as people may abuse them…better to have them killed. She also expressed concern about cat fur and asthma.

The other person told me that he had complained to TC and RC for a long time about cats urinating and defecating on the common corridor. He said 2 of his neighbors feed them upstairs on the 2nd floor. The two neighbours denied feeding the cats. I did not see any food or water bowls or defecation or noticed any smell. I gave the complainant my number to contact me if it happens again. This person has a problem and is angry that nothing had been done. Even he does not insist on removal of the cats…if other methods can  work.

Actually two very observant caregivers knew about the problem on this corricdor...but that was quite some time back. This kitten has now grown up and moved to another area. Both caregives still do spot checks and say that none of the other cats ever come up to defecate on the corridor

I am very disappointed that TC does not keep to the agreement of letting caregivers know about and look into cat-related complaints.  We caregivers are very willing to talk to the people who lure the cats up, to sprinkle camphor powder and to do spot checks and clean up.

As  “cat feeders” we always get very “special” treatment by this RC and this TC Property Manager!

When I was outside the glass door of the RC, reluctant to enter as they were having a meeting, the chairman was getting up to attend to me, then one of the members told him  “this is about the cats” and he promptly sat down again and ignored me...hoping I would go away? Silvia remained outside…although she had agreed to join me as long as I do the talking…she just “didn’t want to see his face”. Such is the bullying of the caregivers!

The chairman did agree to ask TC to delay the culling to give us time to see the MP next Thursday. However when I called the Property Manager today she would not give me such reassurance saying that RC and TC will handle this matter and I was told that I am just a cat feeder and not even a resident of this RC zone. Sadly the caregiver of this zone who is also resides at blk 875, refuses to talk to TC…due to earlier experience with this property manager.

This is plain and simple ....discrimination! And underhanded method of carrying out a survey amounting to dishonesty. Is this the quality we want of RC Chairman who is perhaps abusing his position to impose his own personal agenda against cats? May he be gently reminded that he is receiving privileges as RC Chairman to SERVE ALL RESIDENTS, including "CAT FEEDERS"! Can a complaint of dishonesty filed against the RC Chairman and invite him to graciously step down and be an "ordinary" resident?

please make public the name of the RC

Not surprising most RCs have same non-cat friendly attitude. I often been reminded not to feed stray cats by the RC because in their notice board there is this poster "Don't Feed Stray Cats."
Giving the RC, Cat Welfare Society pamphlets on responsible feeding ... I cleaned up after feeding stray cats, those pamphlets does not help, as long as Town Council and R.C. still displaying those "Don't Feed Stray Cats" in their notice boards, the RCs could not care less on the plight of stray cats.

I hate it when someone holding the position of higher order, claiming their decisions & actions are for the benefits of the majority. But in fact, they re lying.
When injustice is being felt, it is very hard to control one's emotion, like the taxi driver old man who punched the MP.

In the United States, such bullish behaviours will not be tolerated.
Singaporeans are basically 'coward' when they are 'challenged' by those in power. Even the famous Taiwanese Li Au called Singaporeans STUPID.
I think Singaporeans are very well CONTROLLED by their Government.

Is this democratic?

Still no assurance from TC that the cats will not be culled before we are able to see our MP next Thursday.

I think it is ironic that when the government keeps calling for citizens to take an active role in the management of the country and the HDB level asking residents to have a say in what kind of home THEY want, but continue to treat this rare display of spontaneous self-motivated volunteerism in applying a humane method of managing cats, with contempt. Surely these caregivers should be lauded as sending a positive message to the youngsters who seem to astound people with their callous attitude towards defenceless beings like guppies and cats!

The RCs and their committee should be under the jurisdiction of the CDC so write an email to the Mayor that this Chairman has been anything but being fair and just.

I have sent some emails and Sylvia called the Property Officer this morning. She had still not received any call from the RC chairman but told Sylvia not to worry, as she would meet him this week. Let's hope that means that the cats will be save until then. This officer is courteous, shows empathy and actually hears what we are saying. The Property Manager would just drown out any question by repeating her mantra “Let RC and TC handle this”.

Aminah, not all RC’s are the same. My RC (a different zone) did put up CWS posters. Such “don’t feed stray cats” notices will only encourage irresponsible feeding. It is not against the law to feed stray cats, as long as we clean up afterwards. Even our TC removed such notice. Some of the community cats under my care are under a different TC and all their notice boards display a poster on cat management and responsible feeding.

I know not RC's the same, but I must say you are fortunate to have RC putting up CWS posters, unlike my area RC's and TC putting up "Don't Feed Stray Cats" notices.
Kudos too to your TC for removing Don't Feed Stray Cats posters.
Wish more Town Councils and RC's do away with those "Don't Feed Stray Cats" posters.
