Blog EntryIs it about me or about the cat?Nov 4, '06 4:09 AM
for everyone

People advised me not to keep Orange Boy for so long (with no hope of recovery) as it would be more painful to euthanize him after ‘sayang’ him. The vet who suggested euthanasia also said I could give him 5 more days if I wanted to, if it would make me feel better.

Yes, we love those that we ‘tame’ and care for…but should this love not be given freely… never fearing the pain of loss?

Some feel that strays should not be given expensive medical treatment unless they can be adopted. Can we predict the future? Yes, they may get into accidents again…or they could have learned and stay away from cars and go on to live a long life.  At least we give them another chance…help them on their way…

I think the value of love that been shown to a community cat, one that is not adopted is immeasureable. I have seen "old" aunties who patiently wait for grouchy cats to feed and then sprinkled antibiotic powder onto the wounds on their bodies and the happiness they derived when they saw the wounds healed. One, of course, has to make decision with consideration of the constraints of cost and the ability to provide long term intensive care. It is the motivation of wanting a cat to be freed of pain and to be "happy" that is important in whatever decision that is made in the care of a cat.
Once I asked an Italian "Tibetan" Buddhist monk, Venerable Antonio, what he thought about euthanasia. He smiled and he said, "If YOU are willing to experience the karma of 'killing" another sentient being." I think that what he meant was that one has to be very clear of one's motvation. Is it to stop OUR pain or is it to relieve the cat's pain? I, too do not know what the "true" answer is but I hope that I have enough "good karma" to overbalance the "bad karma" that I may unknowingly produce as a result of my "ignorance".

Haha…we have one such grouchy, we call him ‘Big Head’. He comes only once in a while for feeding. Most of the time either Sylvia or me manage to sprinkle some powder…he keeps getting into fights….

Vegancat, I am sure you have more than enough good karma :) I think there is a place for euthanasia … unless we can make the cat /person comfortable and pain free until the time of death…which is possible for humans (according to Kuebler-Ross “On Death and Dying”).

I am also wondering, am I doing the right thing sending pregnant cats for abortion?…but when I consider the facts (not wishful thinking) I will still do it…
